The Florida House Passes A Bill That Will Ban Sanctuary Cities – ACLU Issues Travel Warning In The State

The Florida House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that would ban sanctuary cities and require local law enforcement agents to cooperate with federal immigration authorities such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The bill passed 69-47 along party lines in the Republican-controlled House, as NBC News reported. It was sponsored by Rep. Cord Byrd, a Republican representing the Jacksonville Beach area.

Last week, Byrd appeared in an interview on Fox Business Network and said that the bill would allow for transparency between federal and local law enforcement.

“Here’s the problem: Our state and local law enforcement officers don’t have access to the federal indices, so we don’t know if that person in Florida is using an alias,” Byrd said. “They may have committed a serious violent crime in another state, been deported, and now have come back into the United States. We see that scenario over and over and over. So before we release this potentially dangerous person back into our communities, we want to know whether or not the federal immigration authorities have reason to detain this person further.”

According to the bill, local governments will be fined $5,000 each day they do not comply with the ban, as The Hill reported.

A similar bill is currently pending in the Florida Senate.

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing for an amendment that allows him to “initiate judicial proceedings in the name of the state” against local governments which do not cooperate with federal immigration officials, as CBS Miami reported.

“The governor is supportive of this measure which reiterated his constitutional authority to remove an executive or administrative state, county or municipal” officer for violating state law, said Helen Ferre, a spokeswoman for DeSantis.

Cue the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Following the passage of the bill, the ACLU issued a travel warning for Florida if the bill indeed becomes law.

“If Florida State Bill 168 and House Bill 527 pass, it would undermine local governments’ ability to protect the civil rights of their residents by forcing local officials to cooperate with ICE,” the ACLU wrote in a statement. “It would also put immigrants at risk of violence, potentially forcing victims and witnesses to stay silent for fear of deportation.”

“Both Florida residents, citizens and non-citizens, and travelers could face risks of being racially profiled and being detained without probable cause,” the statement added.

The bill sparked protests around Florida, including in the state’s capital, Tallahassee, as ABC WWSB reported.

Miami police chief Jorge Colina stated that he opposes the bill because, as he claims, it would stop people from reporting crimes for fear of being turned over to immigration authorities.

“The truth is I’d prefer not to have this job if I have to ask fellow officers to go check where someone came from before helping them,” Colina said, reported the Miami Herald.

Florida reportedly doesn’t currently have “sanctuary cities” — unlike other large states in the U.S. which have major cities that are formally declared to be sanctuary cities, including New York City, San Francisco, Seattle.

Pro-Trump Gov DeSantis Scores Highest Approval Ratings Of Any Florida Gov In Over A Decade

A poll released on Wednesday shows Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has the highest approval rating of any governor in over a decade.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents reported that they approved of the work that Gov. DeSantis was doing during his first year in office, compared to just 17 percent who disapproved.

Despite a brutal campaign against him, an astounding 42 percent of Democrats approve of the job the pro-Trump Florida governor is doing while in office.

“Ron DeSantis won the governorship by the slimmest of margins, yet in his first two-plus months in office he has gotten off to a strong start,” stated Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. “Part of Gov. DeSantis’ success is his taking on issues such as the environment on which Republicans often don’t focus.”

Ron DeSantis defeated Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by 32,000 votes in the 2018 gubernatorial race, a result so narrow that it automatically started a statewide recount.

Additionally, 62 percent of respondents asserted they were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the direction the state of Florida is going, as Quinnipiac reported, the highest such rating in the state since 2004.

He was a supporter of President Trump during the 2016 and the 2018 elections, he even created an ad that detailed his level of love for the President.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,058 Florida registered voters from March 6 through March 11, and the approval rating carried a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points in either direction.

Dash-Cam Footage Captures Heroic Off-Duty Cop Trying To Save Baby’s Life On Side Of The Road

Marion County, FL, Deputy Jeremie Nix was heading home when he spotted a woman which needed help on side of the road.

According to WESH, Nechole Crowell told Nix that her three-month-old son Kingston stopped breathing and was in need of immediate help.

‘I just kind of panicked and started crying and I was just like tell me that he is breathing,’ Crowell told WESH.

Deputy Jeremie Nix turned his car around and pulled up next to the woman on the side of the road.

Nix tried to help the baby immediately with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but it did not help.

Then he rushed the baby to the hospital with the police vehicle. Kingston was taken to the hospital on time and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to the doctors from the hospital where Kingston was taken, Nix’s decision to rush the baby straight to them saved his life.

‘I am thanking God, and I’m just grateful, and so I want the world to know that he is amazing and he’s a hero in my book, whether he’s a hero in anyone else’s or not. And I am sure when King gets old enough to hear the story he will think he is a hero as well,’ Crowell told WESH.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office shared a heartwarming message and update about Kingston’s state afterward.

‘Deputy Nix delivered the child to medical personnel, who then began treating the child. We are happy to report that Baby Kingston is doing very well and doctors say he will make a full recovery!!,’ the department’s YouTube page said.

‘Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix’s actions, Baby Kingston is alive today. We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and Baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime!!’

God bless Deputy Jeremie Nix for saving the baby’s life, and may God bless baby Kingston, we wish him to have healthy and happy life further.
