On Saturday, Rep. Ilhan Omar suggested that instead of welcoming, the United States is “infecting” immigrants with mumps.
Rep. Omar took to Twitter, and posted and article from AP Health & Science, claiming that 57 immigration detention facilities in 19 states are infected with mumps.
“We should be welcoming immigrants into our country. Instead, we are locking them in cages and infecting them.” Rep. Ilhan Omar posted.
“We need immigration reform. And that begins with abolishing ICE,” Rep. Omar tweeted, captioning the article from the AP.
In response to the report, Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Bryan Cox stated that medical professionals at detention facilities screen all new detainees within 24 hours of their arrival to ensure that highly contagious diseases are not spread.
Cox also stated that some detainees come from countries where communicable diseases are less controlled than in the U.S. and carry with them the risk of spreading infection.
One can only wonder why so many people come to the U.S. if we are infecting them with deadly deceases.
Maybe Rep. Omar should ask herself that, before she starts making these dangerous claims. Demonizing law enforcement is never a good idea, especially for a U.S. representative.
